Where has the honesty in music gone?

I was listening to Howl by Black Rebel Motor Cycle Club this dinner time which is a honest beautiful album. One where you can imagine the room dark lots of old rugs around maybe candles a bottle of JD while they sit on a stool. They have swapped electric guitars for acoustic shouting for soft melodic vocals but what shines through on a album like this is the honesty. One which can't be faked or fixed with pitch correction, surgical mixing and editing. This comes from a place where most record industry people have forgotten exist the heart, this is what should be keeping music alive not sales on iTunes or getting someone who has been manufactured barely a week before getting to number one on Christmas day. So next time you listen to a song or a album try and buy one with a heart, that was made with a passion and has a message of hope for music in this dark time

Yesterday and all today I am boom mic operating and its hard work very hard have to be thinking all the time and have ninja senses (which makes me sound cool). I did try and record some stuff to make a feature but that went by the wayside when got there just too busy to do anything like that. We were in a rubber factory yesterday and it was discusting! my hands are still a mess today and the cables we used ended up going straight into a binbag to get cleaned. Today promises to be cleaner lest see.

Glasses apparently makes sense working at a computer typing and working with DAW's (digital audio workstations) for prolonged times. We both seem to be on the mend now from the flu however Sandbox have put back there recording till next week at the earliest as they have got a fair few gigs coming up and don't want to be poorly. I have just got me a new channel strip for my ever growing set up and have had a general clear up of the studio/office/computer room.

I have just finished patching up my patch bay and all seems well so far... I am still on the look out for pre amps for all the channels and some decent mics too (always helps) still need some more recources too like a 002 rack to finish off this studio project and get up and running. Hopefuly this will work out who knows.

I now have my phone back woo hoo felt sorry for them as I set my alarm for 12 and only got there for 2 and they couldn't use it. I am borrowing my friends bike for sundays big ride I still don't know all the information, I am taking mic recorder and I am going to do a feature for my show. Also the week after next I am doing some broom mic operating for a indie film I'm not getting paid but it's in Leyland and Preston and they are feeding me. Also it is good experience and you need to start somewhere.

In the toilets at a nursing home I was working at last night, the kind lady who is on shift now has put it in her office will keep you posted on how it goes. My radio show idea has been put aside they just don't have the technology for it yet. I will still try and put a night on and broadcast it at a later date.
Oh go out and buy the last shadow puppets album it rocks, imagine muse meets the coral with something else in there which I have totally forgot.

I need to check the logistics and weather this can be pulled off, will be cool if it does. Or it's just that I am very busy, I have decided to start writing a book called "the diary of a student sound engineer" which is pretty self explanatory. I have been given my next show information with preston fm I will be on air Wed 22nd Oct 1900-2100 you can listen online or on 103.2. The is alot to say but I am a bit pushed for time I have to make some room for my new reel to reel coming tomos hopefully pics to follow.

But on a rainy day like this I like to think about when it was too hot and I was wishing for the rain. This is a picture of striding edge going up to Hellvellyn and it was possibly the best and worst day to do this as it was so hot. The climb was not tough but challenging well worth doing if you haven't done it before.

The cling team is up and running and looking sweet apart from all the scratches on the frame. I will put up some pictures either later tonight or tommorow. I am also bidding on a 8 track reel to reel tape recorder my big idea is to have this and a 002 rack in place with 8 preamps instead of a desk bring all the songs onto tape then import into pro tools then mix inside then take out my bounce back onto tape and put through a compressor and back into pro tools but this is a long way off (financially) with 8 tracks I will be able to record drums 1st then import then all the rest should be fun will keep you posted.

This is from over a year ago cycling down walna scar road into Coniston possible one of the best descent I have ever done. Karen my partner was on the bike behind with the handle bar mounted camera. Edited on my Imac with Imovie not the best software but still good.

I came home from London absolutely exhausted from lack of sleep, intense recording under pressure and traveling. I had to catch the train through to Manchester as I had stuff to do at the school, I had to finish my studio project and if I had time then mix the sandbox sessions I had. Unfortunately I did not have time to mix Sandbox and my ears were that tired I did a awful job with my studio project which I ended up doing last night at home.
The studio in London was very nice I loved mixing on the d-command was very fast and efficient the band I recorded were a sound bunch of southerners who knew what they wanted and how to get it.
